SEPTEMBER 2026 — POST 2 — ROOFERS

Fall Protection That Pays: Turning Your Safety Program Into Lower Premiums

Falls are the story of roofing insurance — the leading cause of death in construction, the driver of roofing’s brutal workers comp rates, and the single factor underwriters weigh most when they price your account. Which means fall protection isn’t just compliance and conscience. It’s the most direct lever you have on what insurance costs your company.

What 'a program' means — beyond harnesses in the trailer

  • A written fall protection plan: anchor points, systems used by roof type and pitch, and who’s responsible on each job — OSHA requires protection at six feet in construction, and your plan should show how you get there on every roof
  • Equipment that’s inspected and logged: harnesses, lanyards, anchors, with dated inspection records and a retirement schedule for worn gear
  • Training with signatures: initial and refresher, in the language your crews actually speak, documented per worker
  • Ladder discipline — setup angles, tie-offs, extension above the eave — because ladder falls hurt as much as roof falls and happen more often
  • Enforcement with teeth: documented discipline when rules are broken, because a program nobody enforces is evidence against you, not for you

How it becomes money

Three ways. Your experience mod: fewer and smaller claims directly cut the multiplier applied to your comp premium, and on roofing payroll every point is real dollars. Your marketability: underwriters quote documented programs and decline shoeboxes — a real safety program is often the difference between three competing quotes and one take-it-or-leave-it. And dividends and credits: several comp markets return premium to safe accounts. The harness pays for itself even before it catches anyone.

Start where you are

If your program is thin, don’t wait for renewal to fix it. Free resources exist — OSHA consultation programs, carrier loss control services that come with your policy — and a documented program started this fall is a negotiating asset by spring. I’ve watched safety programs change quotes by five figures. The fall you prevent changes more than that.
